Promise
“I promise I’ll be back for
you.” These were the last words I’ve
heard from him 6 years ago. My dad was
the only relative I had. My mum and dad
divorced when I was at the age of 3. I
lived with my dad. I always follow my
dad wherever he goes. He’s just like a
pal to me. Unfortunately one day, my
dad’s business failed and he lost almost all of his money. He had no choice but to borrow loans from the
loan sharks. Loan sharks came everyday
to our house and make a mess. There were
splashes of red paints and also scribbles on the wall.
Loan sharks were knocking on our
door all the time. My dad couldn’t stand
it and he decided to mortgage our home to pay half the debt. He was also worried about my safety that they
would come and do me harm. So, he sent
me to the orphanage. I was begging him
not to bring me there and I held him tight.
Not letting go. He scolded me and
tears started rolling down his cheeks. I
can feel that he is feeling the same as how I do at the moment. I
cried and he comforted me and said that he’ll come back.
My mind was empty at that time, I didn’t know what should I do. All I did was sobbing and hoping for him to
come back. I skipped meals, as I was not
into the mood of eating. Until, I met
several new friends at the orphanage. They
gave me back my life. They cheered me up
everyday and wished for me that my dad would definitely come one day. They’re like my family. Having them by my side makes me feel more
lively than usual. Previously, I used to
be a timid and not an out-going person.
All I do is hide, hide, hide and hide.
I feel scared whenever I meet strangers.
With them, I have gained my confidence.
Till now, I’m still waiting. Every
time, I’ll stare at the door waiting for him to come. Now, I’m 18.
It has been 6 years. There’s
still no sign of him. My friends at the
orphanage always asked me what am I doing.
I would just say that, “I’m waiting for a promise.” Some
of them would look curious and some would even laugh at me. I wouldn’t mind if they laughed because I’m
just waiting for that promise he gave me 6 years ago.
After getting my full
distinctions in SPM, I’ve been given a scholarship and an opportunity to study
abroad. I had this great opportunity and
was thinking to move out from the orphanage and continuing my studies
abroad. Suddenly, something hit me in
the heart. That promise. I was disappointed at that time, it has been
6 years! I was afraid that my dad
couldn’t fulfill his promise and I was very upset. As I was going to lose my hope, someone patted
me on the shoulder. That person seems
familiar, he is my DAD!! I was so happy,
tears of joys dripping out from my eyes.
“Thanks daddy, I knew you would come back!”
